‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,
4 he is like the light of morning at sunrise
on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain
that brings grass from the earth.’
2 Samuel 23:3-4
2 Samuel is a book full of action-packed, fast-paced sequences as it lurches between Civil wars, bloody battles, national crises, domestic drama and selfish acts of sinfulness. We see beautiful glimpses of how God it is for God’s people to live under the rule of a King who loves God and loves God’s people. We see God promise to establish his Kingdom forever. Yet even Israel’s greatest King – David, who is the central human character of this book – is deeply flawed and leaves us still on the lookout for a greater King.
The significance of the story of the life of David is shown by the fact that in the very first sentence of the New Testament introduces Jesus is introduced to us as “the son of David” (Matthew 1:1). David’s story illuminates the story of Jesus Christ.
Join us on Sunday mornings over the next couple of months as we see discover how this book prepares us for David’s descendant, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the true King of the eternal Kingdom God promises to his people in this book.
