Join us on Sunday evenings before Easter (and Sunday mornings after Easter) as we dive into the book of 1 John, a letter written by John (the author of John’s Gospel) to a network of churches in modern-day Turkey.
By the time John penned this letter in AD 80-85 he was probably the only surviving member of Jesus’ band of 12 disciples. The churches John is writing to are by now primarily made up of 2nd and 3rd generation Christians, facing a time of persecution. Some may have been sensing their initial spiritual fervour beginning to wane. Others seemed to be losing motivation in the battle against sin, while all were increasingly exposed to the overtures from false teachers who had left the church and set up across the road.
Many of these issues are remarkably similar to the pressure many Christians face today. As we eavesdrop in to John encouraging these 1st century believers I am sure we too will be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to keep living wholeheartedly for Jesus. John’s Spirit-inspired words leap off the page like an impassioned town crier – saying “Know this, hear this, take notice of this.”
1 John will impress upon us the splendour of eternal life that is on offer through Jesus. John will remind us to keep trusting in the God of light in this dark world, and with sincere grandfatherly affection he reminds us of the assurance we have in Christ, urge us to love other believers, and resist the lies of false teachers.
