“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
There are few topics in the Christian faith that produce as much confusion (and sometimes controversy) than the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Seminary professor Gordon Fee quotes one of his students as saying “God the Father makes perfectly good sense to me, and God the Son I can quite understand; but the Holy Spirit is a gray, oblong blur.”
As a result of this confusion some Christians can make the mistake of functionally ignoring the Holy Spirit. Others can make the opposite mistake of fixating the Holy Spirit and failing to realise that much of His ministry involves being a floodlight shining brightly on Jesus, directing the eyes of our heart to the salvation Jesus has won for us.
This summer sermon series aims to help us grow in our appreciation of the work of Holy Spirit in our lives. The first sermon will introduce the person of the Holy Spirit – with the rest of the series focusing on the work of the Holy Spirit and His role in God’s glorious plan of salvation. As we look at what the Holy Spirit does, we really get to know who He is.
We’ll delight together in recognising that God the Holy Spirit - who is gifted to every follower of Jesus and lives in every follower of Jesus – brings us new life, a new relationship with God, a new understanding of salvation, new desires to live wholeheartedly as followers of Jesus, a new assurance of our heavenly future, and a new equipping to serve Jesus on earth.
