Deuteronomy is set 40 years after the Exodus. A new generation of Israelites stand on the edge of the Promised Land facing the same question of faith their forefathers failed. Will they trust God and move on or will they doubt him and retreat again into the wilderness? What can Moses say to God’s People before he dies that will give them faith for the future? Answer: he looks back at God’s faithfulness reminding them that as God has been with them in the past, so he will be with them in the future. They can move forward with faith because of God’s unchanging character.
